How Brothers Construction Went from Declining Traffic to 1,200+ Weekly Visits

Colorado-based basement finishing and remodeling

About the Client

Founded in 1978, Brothers Construction is a Colorado-based basement finishing and basement remodeling company operating out of a showroom and design center in Historic Downtown Littleton.

Serving homeowners throughout Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Castle Rock, Castle Pines, Denver, Aurora, and Lakewood, this long-standing basement contractor has built a reputation on personal service, transparent line-item pricing, and larger, higher-end basement projects across the Denver metro.

Brothers Construction primarily caters to homeowners investing in premium finished basements, focusing on enduring quality, design, and value backed by an industry-leading lifetime finished basement warranty.

Brothers Construction partnered with Fencepost in January 2024 to rebuild its organic search visibility, clean up its lead pipeline, and generate consistent local leads for high-value basement finishing projects. Their main goal was to reclaim ground in a Denver-area market that new competitors had crowded, while generating positive ROI from their marketing investment.

Through a strategic mix of local SEO, paid acquisition revamps, conversion path fixes, and review growth, Fencepost helped transform Brothers Construction’s digital presence, driving measurable growth in rankings, organic traffic, and qualified leads.

The Challenge

When Brothers Construction first partnered with Fencepost, their online presence wasn’t working hard enough to support their business goals. Several compounding issues were holding back their visibility in a competitive local market.

Declining organic traffic with no recovery in sight. Ahrefs data showed a steady downward trend throughout 2024, with average organic traffic dropping from a peak of around 320 visits in January to consistently hovering in the 160–200 range by mid-year — a decline of nearly 40% that showed no signs of reversing on its own.

Critically low search click-through performance. Google Search Console data from the baseline window painted a sobering picture: despite generating 164K impressions, the site earned only 530 total clicks — a 0.3% average CTR. With an average position of 32.6, Brothers Construction’s website wasn’t showing up on the first page of Google for most of its important search terms, so potential customers were finding and contacting competing businesses instead.

High visibility without conversion. The gap between impressions and clicks revealed the core problem: the site was being seen, but it wasn’t compelling enough in the search results to earn the click. Weak title tags, unoptimized meta descriptions, and poor keyword targeting meant that even when the site appeared, it failed to capture intent.

Overall, Brothers Construction struggled with:

  • Declining organic traffic — down nearly 40% through 2024
  • A 0.3% average CTR against 164K search impressions
  • An average search position of 32.6, well outside page one
  • Weak title tags, meta descriptions, and keyword targeting
  • Increased competition from new entrants in the Denver market

Objectives

At the start of the engagement, Fencepost identified three core objectives for Brothers Construction:

1. Reverse declining organic traffic and drive sustained growth

With organic traffic trending downward through 2024, the goal was to stabilize and grow monthly visits consistently over 12 months.

2. Improve search rankings and click-through performance

Brothers Construction was averaging position 32.6, effectively invisible to most searchers. The objective was to move target keywords to page 1 and improve CTR from its 0.3% baseline.

3. Establish authority in AI-powered search

As AI Overviews and generative search experiences reshape how people find local contractors, the goal was to produce content authoritative enough to be cited by AI engines.

These objectives were set to rebuild trust in local search, defend the company’s position against new competitors, and drive a steady flow of homeowner inquiries for premium basement finishing projects across the Denver metro.

Our Approach

To help Brothers Construction overcome its visibility challenges and dominate the Highlands Ranch and Denver basement finishing market, Fencepost developed a comprehensive SEO strategy built on five core pillars: technical SEO, on-page optimization, content creation, link building, and local SEO.

1. Technical SEO

We began with a thorough audit of the website using Ahrefs and Google Search Console, identifying critical issues affecting crawlability, indexation, and site performance. Early findings revealed broken links, missing schema markup, unsubmitted sitemaps, and HTTP/HTTPS internal link inconsistencies. Over the course of the engagement, we resolved these issues through multiple technical sprints, including schema audits, indexing submissions, crawlability checks, and a full meta tags audit. We also activated an llms.txt file to signal content availability to AI crawlers — a forward-looking step that directly contributed to Brothers Construction’s visibility in AI-powered search experiences. These efforts elevated the site’s Ahrefs Health Score to 99 (Excellent).

2. On-Page Optimization

With a clean technical foundation in place, we turned to the pages themselves. High-priority service and location pages were optimized with targeted keywords, improved title tags, meta descriptions, and header structures. Internal linking was systematically implemented across all blogs using anchor text like basement finishing in Highlands Ranch to reinforce topical authority and geographic relevance. Existing blogs were periodically revisited and re-optimized to keep pace with algorithm updates and shifting keyword opportunities, ensuring no page was left behind as the site grew.

3. Content Strategy

Content was the engine of Brothers Construction’s growth. Over 30 months, Fencepost produced 30+ blog posts targeting high-intent basement finishing queries — from cost guides and design ideas to step-by-step remodeling walkthroughs and Highlands Ranch-specific topics. Location pages were built and optimized for key Denver metro markets including Highlands Ranch, Lakewood, Aurora, Castle Rock, Parker, Lone Tree, and Douglas County. In mid-2025, the content strategy evolved to include AI search optimization — restructuring existing content with FAQ sections, FAQ Schema, and clear answer-forward formatting to maximize visibility in Google AI Overviews and generative search results.

4. Link Building & Authority Growth

A consistent monthly link building program ran throughout the entire engagement. We secured high-quality local citations through trusted directories. In the later phases of the campaign, we pursued high-authority editorial placements using targeted anchor text, further strengthening Brothers Construction’s topical authority and trustworthiness in the eyes of both search engines and AI models.

5. Local SEO

Local SEO remained a constant priority from Month 1. We fully optimized the Google Business Profile — refining categories, services, photos, and descriptions — and maintained a consistent weekly GBP post schedule throughout the campaign. Proximity analysis and local map competitor audits were conducted at key intervals to identify ranking opportunities and gaps. Combined with an expanding network of location pages and localized blog content, these efforts positioned Brothers Construction as the go-to basement finishing contractor across the greater Denver metro area.

Implementation Timeline

Our SEO campaign for Brothers Construction began in February 2024 with a full foundation setup — establishing tracking, analytics, and a clear keyword strategy before any optimization work began.

Over 30 months, the engagement evolved from ground-up SEO infrastructure to a content-rich, technically sound, and AI-visible local authority in the Denver / Highlands Ranch basement finishing market.

PHASE 1,  MONTHS 1-2 [Feb. – Mar. 2024]

Foundation & Technical Setup

We started by building the complete SEO infrastructure: client intake, Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4, Agency Analytics, BrightLocal, and GBP access. A full SEO assessment and keyword research were conducted, followed by an initial Google Business Profile optimization covering all 8 profile elements and the launch of weekly GBP posts. Month 2 introduced Technical SEO, on-page optimization of the first pages, a baseline report, and the first round of local citation building (10 citations).

1

PHASE 2,  MONTHS 3-6 [Apr. – Jul. 2024]

Content Launch & Local Expansion

With the foundation in place, we shifted to content production and local targeting. Blog posts began rolling out consistently, covering energy-efficient basement remodeling, heating and cooling options, and basement lighting. Location pages were created for Highlands Ranch, Lakewood, Aurora, Castle Rock, Denver, and Parker. GBP posts and citations continued monthly, alongside ongoing technical SEO and link building.

2

PHASE 3,  MONTHS 7-11 [Aug. – Dec. 2024]

Scaling Content & URL Indexing

Content publishing accelerated with posts targeting high-intent basement queries — finished vs. unfinished basements, bathroom additions, flooring options, and furniture ideas. Technical SEO shifted focus to URL submission for indexing. Additional location pages for Colorado, Castle Pines, and Douglas County launched, plus a new page targeting basement flooring keywords.

3

PHASE 4,  MONTHS 12-15 [Jan. – Apr. 2025]

Authority Building & On-Page Refinement

January 2025 marked a significant acceleration in content output, with two blogs per month becoming the standard. A technical audit for indexability and crawlability was completed, blog optimization began on existing posts, and Month 15 brought internal linking for location pages, LocalBusiness Schema implementation, and a comprehensive tech check across all pages.

4

PHASE 5,  MONTHS 16-18 [May – Jul. 2025]

Technical Recovery & Content Restructure

A critical milestone: Ahrefs site health was flagged and prioritized for immediate recovery. Alongside the technical fix, keyword research for location pages was completed, 8 existing location pages were re-optimized, and a new Lone Tree page was added. A refreshed content strategy scaled to 2 blogs per month, and FAQ Schema was implemented across all blog posts.

5

PHASE 6,  MONTHS 19-23 [Aug. – Dec. 2025]

AEO Optimization & Comprehensive Audits

This phase marked the pivot toward AI search visibility. Existing blogs were optimized for AI search, structured to surface in AI Overviews and generative results. A meta tags audit, schema audit and validation, and ongoing technical fixes were completed. An llms.txt file was activated in November 2025, and a comprehensive SEO audit closed out the year.

6

PHASE 7,  MONTHS 24-27 [Jan. – Apr. 2026]

Internal Linking, E-E-A-T & Competitor Analysis

Internal linking was implemented across all blogs using the anchor text “basement finishing in Highlands Ranch” — a targeted authority signal for the primary keyword. February brought an E-E-A-T audit covering author bios, citations, and trust signals, FAQ Schema checks across all pages, and a Table of Contents rebuild. A review and testimonial section was added to the homepage in March, followed by a full proximity analysis and local map pack competitor analysis.

7

PHASE 8,  MONTHS 28-30 [May – Jul. 2026]

EEAT, Editorial Outreach & Final Optimizations

The final phase focused on maximum authority signals. An EEAT audit and implementation was completed alongside a competitor map analysis. June included a high-authority editorial outreach initiative using the anchor text “basement finishing in Highlands Ranch,” plus schema audits and ongoing citation building. July addressed remaining technical items including HTTP→HTTPS internal link fixes, FAQ section additions, and a nav bar fix.

Timeline Summary

Over 30 months, Fencepost executed a methodical, compounding SEO strategy for Brothers Construction — moving from zero infrastructure to a fully optimized, AI-visible local authority in the highly competitive Denver / Highlands Ranch basement finishing market. Every phase built on the last: technical foundations enabled content to rank, content enabled authority to build, and authority enabled AI engines to cite Brothers Construction as a trusted source. The result was a 300%+ increase in organic traffic, a 70% year-over-year growth in clicks, and visibility across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot.

Results

A consistent, data-driven strategy fueled major growth for Brothers Construction in search visibility and organic performance. Over 30 months, the campaign delivered clear, measurable results across every key area — from rankings and traffic to technical health and AI search visibility.

Explosive Growth in Organic Traffic

Brothers Construction’s organic traffic saw a dramatic turnaround over the course of the engagement. Starting from an average of approximately 300 weekly visits in late 2024, traffic grew steadily through 2025 before surging to a peak of over 1,200 visits by April 2026 — a 300%+ increase from baseline. As of August 2026, the site continues to hold strong at 900–1,000 weekly visits, demonstrating that the growth is sustainable, not a spike.

Comparing June–August 2025 to the same period in 2026, total clicks grew 70% (530 → 899) while average position improved dramatically from 32.6 to 14.8 — moving Brothers Construction from page 3 to page 2 on average, with top keywords now landing on page 1. CTR doubled from 0.3% to 0.6%, confirming that ranking improvements translated directly into more qualified traffic.

Conclusion

Brothers Construction’s journey with Fencepost is proof that sustainable growth comes from strategic, consistent execution — not quick fixes.

Over 30 months, a fully integrated approach combining SEO and Google Ads transformed a declining online presence into a thriving digital asset that ranks on page 1, earns AI citations, and drives qualified basement finishing leads every single day.

The foundation is built, the authority is established, and the results continue to compound.

Why This Investment Paid Off

For Brothers Construction, committing to a long-term digital partnership with Fencepost wasn’t just a marketing decision; it was a business growth decision. Running both SEO and Google Ads with Fencepost, every dollar invested worked harder through a fully integrated strategy that drove visibility at every stage of the customer journey.

Organic traffic that keeps growing. While Google Ads drove immediate visibility, the SEO investment built a compounding foundation that delivers traffic month after month, growing from ~300 to 1,200+ weekly visits without an ongoing cost-per-click. As organic rankings strengthened, the overall cost per lead across both channels improved.

Rankings that convert. Moving from position 32.6 to 14.8, with a 70% YoY increase in clicks and CTR doubling to 0.6%, means Brothers Construction now dominates both paid and organic results, maximizing the chances of capturing homeowners actively searching for basement finishing services.

A future-proof digital presence. With a Health Score of 99 and citations across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, Brothers Construction is visible where search is heading, a competitive edge that paid ads alone cannot build.

When SEO and paid search work together, the results compound. That is the Fencepost difference.
